This post is a little bit of a promotion. Fellow writer and friend of mine, Cathryn Grant is about to publish her first novel and like many other writers she is taking advantage of this modern world of wonder in which we live and going it alone, making the novel available on the Kindle and via Smashwords.
Cathryn has been writing for some time and regularly posts new short stories and flash fiction over on her blog. Her genre is the newly-coined “Suburan Noir” and casts familiar settings in a new, uncomfortable light where everyday scenarios escalate into something far more sinister indeed. Now I’m a dyed-in-the-wool fantasy and sci-fi fan; if there’s not swords or rayguns or some sort of supernatural angle then things usually don’t interest me so I think the highest praise I can lay on Cathryn’s writing is that despite her settings being our own homes and neighbourhoods and the threats being ordinary co-workers and fellow commuters I still find her work satisfying, unsettling and engaging.
Cathryn’s debut novel is titled “Demise of the Soccer Moms” and looks at the fallout of quiet, regular neighbourhood when a new single mother comes to town. I know that doesn’t sound all that exciting but there’s almost certainly far more to it than that – and look at the cover, it’s got blood on it – blood! The novel will be available early in January 2011 but till then you can get a sneak-peek over here.
