The Thing About Trains

The thing I really like about trains – riding on them that is – is that it’s like seeing the world around you with brand new eyes. I think, partially, this is to do with the height difference. Being just a few more feet about the ground grants a slightly unfamiliar view of the passing landscape. But also it’s the route taken, following paths that roads would not. Getting to sneakily peak into people’s passing back gardens or the scrap yards, industrial lots or high rise offices that wouldn’t normally have seen. And the final, deciding factor is the speed – moving at a pace slow enough to be bombarded with visual information but fast enough to be left wondering about you had just glimpsed, leaving imagination to fill in the gaps. Boarded up windows hide away crime scenes, an old church becomes the starting point for some grand mystery that spans the overgrown footpaths and wide fields that follow. That’s the thing I like most about trains.
